Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Tens of thousands of dogs are disposed of every year by the British greyhound racing industry - because they fail to make the grade as racers or when their racing days are over.About 25,000 greyhound pups are registered every year in the British Isles. The number bred is actually many thousands more than this,when taking into account pups that never get registered and those killed by breeders at a very young age.Although most of these dogs are bred in Ireland, the majority are produced to supply the demands of the British greyhound racing industry.Thousands of greyhound pups and young dogs are put to death because they fail to reach racing standards. We estimate that over 10,000 are killed annually in the British Isles.
Dogs which actually make it to the track are very likely to experience suffering during their racing careers. It has been estimated that greyhounds running on British tracks sustain more than 12,000 injuries every year and that 10% of dogs that race are already suffering from injuries. Injured toes, torn muscles, strained tendons and arthritic joints are commonplace.At least 10,000 greyhounds “retire” from racing in Britain every year, at an average age of just 2½ years old. This is either because of injury or because they are adjudged to be no longer good enough to race.Very few of these dogs manage to find good homes. This is hardly surprising, given a situation where many thousands of ordinary dogs are put to sleep every year because no homes are available for them.The British greyhound racing industry has admitted that 500 - 1,000 retired greyhounds are put to death every year. This alone would be enough to justify a ban on greyhound racing, but the true figure for retired dogs killed is, sadly, far, far higher. Quite possibly as many as 6,000.
Many ex-racing greyhounds are simply abandoned and a large number are killed, sometimes by extremely cruel methods such as drowning or poisoning, because some owners and trainers are not prepared to pay the cost of having them put to sleep by a vet.
We are receiving an increasing number of reports of trainers shooting dogs when their racing days are over.We don’t wish to suggest that everyone involved in greyhound racing is cruel or insensitive. There are some “owners” and trainers who love their dogs and take good care of them for the whole of their natural lives. But this only applies to a small minority of the thousands of dogs which enter racing, and thousands more are put to death before even reaching that stage.Every year many hundreds of "unwanted" greyhounds are shipped to Spain,to be kept for racing in appalling conditions or used for hunting and coursing. Dogs which turn out to be no good for hunting are often brutally disposed of, with hanging being a favourite method.

i know this is going of the subject of parrots but i would like to introduce you to a Gentle Giant his racing name was Comet but we have name him Lurch . He has been living with us for three weeks now and has settled in very well , Lurch is three years old he probably stared his racing life at 18 mouths old.

Parrot food
this is everyday parrot seed mix, Tidy mix parrot diet food is just as good.
pulse and rice soaking mix,fruit treats,and pine nuts these are good to be
used as a training aid parrots love them and they are quick and easy for them to eat.
their attention is quickly back on you, give a reward for good behaviour when your
parrot is learning something new. Frozen vegetables can be bought to the boil, and leave
to cool, can be fed slightly warm.You can feed pasta cooked or raw wholegrain is
better .Cooked rice, wholegrain is better,you can feed parrots eggs scrambled, boiled
poached, eggs can be fed in a whole variety of ways, don't throw the shell away the egg
shells are a good source of calcium

Safe foods for birds.
Banana you can mash the banana for spoon feeding, apple,strawberry, melon and pear
blackberry, apricot, raspberry, cherry, nectarine, peach's, pineapple and mango's. You
can feed parrots potatoes boiled or dry roasted ( i would never fed a parrot, french-Fry's
have salt in them which is not good for parrot's). Swede this can be boiled in water or
cooked with carrot's in fresh orange juice, spinach , kale, cabbage, marrow and courgette which you can boiled or baked, cauliflower, pumpkin and the seeds, and sweet potatoes boiled in water
or in orange juice or baked, sugar snap peas and mange-tout lightly steamed. Green beans boiled
or steamed, whole wheat, brown rice , pearl barley, oats and Bulgar wheat. You can fed parrot's
natural yogurt sweetened with fresh fruit this is a good source of beneficial bacteria , promotes
optimum conditions within the digestive tract for natural, healthy flora. Dried powdered chilli's
paprika can be used reasonably liberally. Monty's favourite is ready-brek with honey....

Household Dangers

INAPPROPRIATE FOODS.
Anything high in sugar and salt is very inappropriate, as are fatty foods.
Serious foods such as caffeinated and alcoholic, avocado and chocolate,
which is toxic to many pets!!
TOYS.
Some toys that are designed for parrots may not be safe for them.
Please make sure your parrots especially the larger ones, can not break off ,and
remove parts and swallow them, the rope toys can be dangerous if the rope is long
enough to get them tangled up in while they are playing...
WINDOWS AND DOORS,MIRRORS.
Windows and mirrors pose danger to birds, some serious injuries have happened
with birds flying into them, i shut the blinds and cover the mirror with a towel.
and make Shaw all windows and exterior doors are closed leaving no chance for
the bird to escape....

POISONING.
Birds are susceptible to wide range of toxic substances which can injure or kill
birds either by ingestion {eating} or inhalation {breathing them in}. One of the common toxicities in pet birds is insecticides sprayed in the home, others to include are ammonia,
bleach, oven cleaner, glues nail polish and nail polish remover, pant, perfumes and heavy
metals {lead and zinc}.some house hold plants can be dangers if your bird eats them!!
NON STICK COATINGS.
This warrants a special mention these products is very common in your home.
When overheated the non stick coating emits that is toxic to birds when it is
inhaled.The coating can be found on non stick cookware also waffle irons, bread
machines, ironing board covers and not forgetting irons and curling irons, hair dryers
and much more....
OPEN WATER.
Toilets are the most common source of open water in the home it is too easy for your
pet bird to fall in and drown, the other water sources to watch out for are sinks, buckets, and the
bathtubs,water bowls for cats and dogs.

SHARE YOU LOVE WITH ME.
Please remember that you are my very special person, i put all my trust and
love in you. We parrots are used to being monogamous{ on bar hopping for us }.
Please do not go away for a long periods of time or give me away, that would
be a sadness from which i may never recover.It might seem to be asking a lot,
remember you can learn about my needs well before bringing me home. It's
like having a baby or taking a new job isn't a fair reason, you made a commitment
to me first. If you think you must leave me because you might die, provide for me forever
after you leave.I could live to a rip old age but i can not provide for myself. Please
remember i am in a small cage amongst people who are not of my blood.

SPEAK MY 'LANGUAGE'
You get upset with me when i knock over my water bowl, when i
throw my food a round and when i scream, and pluck my feathers.
I don't do all these to annoy you ,am probably trying to tell you something
{perhaps that i am hurting or i am lonely or i am sad}. To speak my {body}
language. Remember i am alone, of all creatures on this planet learn to speak yours!!
SEE ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL.
I am unique and feeling being. No two of us are alike, please do not be
to disappointed in me if i do not talk like you wanted, or i can not do the
tricks that your friend's parrot can do.If you pay very close attention to me
i will show you a unique being who will give you so much more then talking and
playing.Please give me a chance so i can show you who i am, i think you will find
the effort well worth it. Remember i am not a ornament, i do not enhance any living room.
I am not a status symbol, if you use me as one.I just might take a nip at your up-turned nose!!!

I NEED MY OWN DOCTOR.
You may not under stand my physiology and therefore you may not recognize it
early on when i get sick. It may be too late when you do ,because i hide my illnesses
{ remember what i said about me being an animal of the jungle, where there are lots
of predators}. I need an avian vet a specialist {no HMOs for me please.} If you can't
afford one, perhaps you shouldn't have taken me home.
PLEASE DON'T PUNISH ME.
Just as i don't aways under stand your peculiarities, you may not under stand mine.
i don't try to get in trouble, remember, a house is not the jungle. If i do screw up,
don't yell at me and never hit me.I have sensitive ears and i may never trust you again
if you hit me. Hands are sometimes scary things to us {why in the world would you not be
zygodactyl like us?}. Even more importantly, we don't learn by you punishing us.
We are gentle creatures who only hit back to protect ourselves. We learn through
patience and a lot of love.

GET TO KNOW ABOUT PARROTS BEFORE YOU BRING ME HOME.
I am not a domesticated pet like a dog or cat. I still have the spirit of the jungle in me.
I have special needs which you may find hard to fill.Please don't learn these too late
for my well-being. Please don't acquire one of my cousins wild from the jungle,it will
jeopardize his survival and well-being, and that won't be a party for you either!
GIVE ME THE LARGEST HOME POSSIBLE.
I am used to flying through rain forests or savannas. I have given up this gift for your
pleasure. At the very least, give me enough room to flap my wings and exercise. I need toys
for my amusement and wood to chew, otherwise i might confuse your home with the forest
and it's trees.
GIVE ME A NUTRITIOUS DIET.
I need a wide variety of fresh and nutritious foods, even if they take time to prepare.
I cannot survive on seeds alone. take time to learn what my needs and preferences are.
LET ME HAVE A "SOCIAL LIFE".
I am a gregarious flock animal, but i am not one of you. I need lots of socialization
to leard how to act with you, with my siblings.I also need to have adequate quality
time with you every day, no matter what your schedule or other needs are.
I am a living, feeling creature. Above all, i need to be able to have complete trust in you
and count on your predictability in looking after me everyday.
LET ME BE CLEAN.
I may like to drop food or even throw it, but i need meticulous cleanliness to be healthy.
My skin itches without frequent showers, the barbs of my feathers won't seal if they become
oily and , worst of all, i may become ill if my food or water is not always sanitary.

Oscar And Bobby

Sweet Birdie Dreams My Baby Boy's xxxxx .

Oscar and Bobby were my two first African Grey parrots . I brought them from the same pet shop i got Amos from. Bobby was a second hand parrot in he's own cage next to the shop's play stand , there was Oscar i was torn between the too of them , which one to buy Bobby or Oscar, Bobby is eighteen months old Oscar was six months old, Bobby came home, then next day Oscar came home ,and i was so happy to be a proud mum of two African Grey Parrots.

Bobby passed way just eighteen months old ,he had died from Aspergillosis (which vet reckons they both had when i bought them) it is a fungal infection it is found in nut shells like monkey nuts, it is not the nuts themselves . Then Oscar got ill so back to the vets. Oscar passed way on the seventeenth of April in my arms. the monkey nuts had been in the food i got and was recommended by the pet shop. ( i never go back they now)

Through the sad loss i have been blessed with a fifteen week old happy, healthy baby boy African Grey ( who dose not eat any monkey nut's or peanuts)

From my story i hope that fellow parrot/new owners can learn. So no one go's though the suffering and heartache that i have. If i could turn back time i would have made shaw my sweet baby boy's never had monkey nuts or peanuts...

Amos

Amos was my first parrot he his ten years old . I brought him second hand from a pet shop about for years ago now. Amos came with emotional baggage, that i was not informed to me at the time of purchase

Amos has improved over the time that i have had him , but sometimes it is a case of two steps forward and three steps back . It is very rewarding though, i wouldn't be without him now.
